Comic Book Recommendation: Murder Falcon

I typically don’t get emotional over things like movies and TV shows. I can think of twice in my adult life when that actually happened. Now, we can add a third instance, and that was after reading a limited comic series called Murder Falcon.

I’m sure you’re asking how I could get choked up over a comic book, let alone one called Murder Falcon. Well, let me tell you about the comic first.

While Murder Falcon is completely over the top and fantastical, it’s also a love letter to the musical genre of heavy metal. You know, the genre that tends to be over the top and fantastical. I’ve been a metal fan since I was a teenager back in the 80s. Back then, I used the music as one of my escapes from a pretty dismal home life. This comic perfectly gets that sentiment. It’s not a one for one comparison, but the general vibe is definitely there.

You don’t have to be a metal fan to enjoy the comic, but a knowledge of basic metal history is a plus.

I heard about Murder Falcon after I read my then favorite comic of all time, Do A Powerbomb! That comic was another zany and over the top love letter to the art of professional wrestling, another one of my escapes since childhood. Do A Powerbomb! and Murder Falcon were both written and drawn by Daniel Warren Johnson. Thanks to these two comics, DWJ is now one of my favorite comic creators, up there with names like Denny O’Neil and Mark Waid. He seems like a version of me if I was born 20 years later and had actual talent.

As far as the emotional reaction from Murder Falcon, it came at the very end of the comic. I won’t delve into any spoilers, but when the moment came, I actually put my hand to my mouth to stifle an audible gasp, so my significant other wouldn’t hear me. Who, ironically, reviews my blog posts for grammatical errors before they’re published, so, hi baby.

Murder Falcon is now my favorite comic of all time. I can’t recommend it enough.
