TIME: E-cigs will steal your children

smokingkids

According to TIME Magazine the rate at which e-cig ads are luring your children has jumped 321%. Maybe it’s just me because I blog about crime also, but by using the word luring it sounds like they’re comparing e-cigs to child molesters.

Anyway here’s what has TIME so aghast…

Advertising exposure for e-cigarettes increased 256% for young people ages 12 to 17 from 2011 to 2013. During the same period, exposure for young adults ages 18 to 24 spiked 321%. Over 75% of this advertising was shown on TV networks that cater to these age groups including AMC, Country Music Television, Comedy Central, WGN America, TV Land, and VH1. Over 80% of these ads were for the e-cigarette brand, blu eCigs.

Those last 3 really don’t seem like channels kids would watch to me but what do I know. I’d be more worried if they listed channels like Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network, or Disney. Not everyone who watches the above channels are ages 12-17. What this article forgets to factor in is parenting. It’s not TV’s job to tell your teenagers what’s right and what’s wrong. Ultimately it’s up to the parents to talk to their kids about not only e-cigs but tobacco as well.
