Not for the main story which shows Steve Trevor as a congressional liaison to the Justice League which I did think was clever. But no, it’s comic of the week because of the picture above, the return of Captain Marvel, or Shazam as he’s now being called.
And I didn’t like this issue just because of Shazam but because it was actually well written. I did something with this comic I haven’t done in a long time, I read it twice.
I’ll be honest, I was worried about Shazam’s new treatment with the way the New 52 has been but so far I have little to complain about. I like that they modernized a lot of Billy Batson’s backstory such as he’s now a podcaster instead of a kid radio reporter. I’m not sure how I feel about Billy being another smart-alecky kid. Part of Cap’s appeal to me was the golly gosh gee-whiz attitude of Billy, but it’s still early in the story.
I’m also not sure how I feel about it taking place in Philadelphia and not the fictional Fawcett City. While I’m glad to see Philly get a superhero I don’t see DC changing Batman to New York or Superman to Chicago.
Also, the costume looks good. I was afraid it was going to be so far from the original that we wouldn’t recognize it.
So far so good with Shazam, hopefully, they won’t make Shazam more ‘gritty’. Some comics need to be accessible to kids and Shazam would be perfect for them.
